Wood Heating
The sun is the source of almost all the energy that human society uses. Solar power, wind power, wood energy and even buried energy like fossil fuels all come – or once came – from the sun. However, only current solar energy can be considered in infinite supply and essentially renewable. Wood is one of the longest-used sources of renewable energy in human history. Using renewable energy is like living off the earth’s assets, and never touching its savings.
Wood Heating Installation
Come into our store for a chat. We’d love to discuss and plan your future wood stove, insert or fireplace installation. We can discuss the benefits of all wood heating appliances, but most of all we would like to determine what product best meets your needs and suits your lifestyle.
Here are a few things to consider:
Try to determine how much space you’d like to heat with your new wood appliance. We can review the pros and cons of different sizes and types of wood burning equipment.
One of the most over looked components of a wood stove, insert or fireplace installation is the chimney. The chimney can “make or break” how a wood appliance will perform. We can help you plan for a new chimney installation or discuss how to use your existing chimney.
When installing a wood appliance in Ontario, the homeowner is required to obtain a building permit from their local municipal office – in eastern Ontario usually it is between $40 and $150.
Check out this great video, by our good friend John Gulland, that illustrates the difference between the Pacific Energy Advanced Technology Wood Burning stove and the older technology wood stove (still sold at many retail stores):
At Renewable Energy, all of our wood stove, insert and fireplace installations are completed by W.E.T.T. (Wood Energy Technology Transfer) certified installers. Most insurance companies recognize and encourage wood appliance installations by W.E.T.T.-certified installers, as a reassurance that the installation is safe and meets building code requirements.
Renewable Energy began in the mid-1970s in response to the desire for energy independence as an alternative to unstable oil prices. We are confident that we can supply you with a wood-fired appliance to meet your needs.

You will be living with your new stove for years to come, so we want to take the time to make sure that it meets your needs and fits with your lifestyle. With a wood stove installation there are four areas of consideration: the stove, the venting, floor protection and installation.
The Stove:
Most wood stove lines have three sizes Small, Medium or Large. Price Range $999 to $4,600
Small Stoves: The small stoves are not designed to hold an overnight fire and the firebox is smaller than 1.8 cubic feet. The Price ranges from $999 to $2,600
Medium Stoves: The medium stove will typically hold an overnight fire and firebox ranges from 1.8 to 2.5 cubic feet. The Price ranges from $1,370 to $3,600
Large Wood Stoves: The large stoves will hold a long fire and the firebox is greater than 2.5 cubic feet. The Price ranges from $1,750 to $4,600
The Venting:
Most venting installations are broken into two parts, the black pipe and the chimney. Price Ranges from $269 to $3,500
Double Walled smoke pipe: This venting takes the smoke from the stove to the chimney (the chimney begins typically at the wall or ceiling of the room that the stove is in). The brand we sell (ICC Ultrablack) has a stainless steel interior liner and it is guaranteed for life. Price ranges from $269 to $500
Chimney: The Canadian Chimney Standard is the strictest standard in the world and the brand of chimney we have sold for over 15 years (ICC Excel) has the best warranty in the industry. The chimney must be three feet above the roof line, and must be two feet higher than everything within 10 feet around it. Prices range from $800 to $3,000
The Floor Protection:
The size of the wood stove will dictate the size of the floor protection. Prices range from $250 to $500
The code requires that protection underneath the wood stove must be made of non-combustible material and it must be seamless. A good example of this is ceramic tiles that are grouted between the tiles. Some folks make their own floor protection and other folks purchase our pre-made hearth pads.
WETT Certified Installation:
Price ranges from $695 to $1,500
Most insurance companies insist on a WETT Certified professional to install your wood stove. Our technicians are WETT Certified and once the installation is completed and paid in full, we will issue you a WETT Certificate that you can simply give to your insurance company.
Other Considerations:
Building Permit: Ontario law requires that before the installation of every wood stove, chimney or liner the homeowner obtains a building permit prior to the installation. Simply visit your local Municipal office and a permit is usually issued on the spot. Prices range from $40 to $150
Insurance: Insurance Companies will usually want to ensure that you have obtained a building permit prior to the installation of the wood stove. They typically insist that the installation was performed by WETT Certified professionals, such as our installers. We will provide you with a WETT certificate at the end of the job for you to take to your insurance provider.
Please visit our showroom and we can walk you through the various options that will fit your home and your needs.
